How to scratch build a RR Tower in HO Scale. I needed a tower for my new railyard area and had some supplies laying around and i got busy. I used Styrene plastic (Plastruct brand) for the clapboard siding and used Grandt line windowsa along with some Campbell ones too. If you have an exacto knife handy and some paint you can do this too. Hope this helps somone. Since i had to build the tower i thought i would record it as i went along.

A second attraction to model trains is doing something that requires working with your hands to make something that can be displayed to others with pride. Whether it is the scenery, the benchwork, or the trains themselves, this can be a fairly technical hobby that requires some level of skill in working with your hands. There are aspects of woodworking, metalworking, mechanics, electricity, automation, and crafts all rolled up into this hobby. If you are only interested in one of these things, the others can mostly be purchased as kits so that you do not have to be a jack of all trades.
One more thing that may interest those with children or grandchildren is the opportunity to share a hobby with them. Because these are “toy sized” trains, they are often seen by children as interesting and exciting, but because they are not toys, and require some skill to operate, adults also find them interesting and exciting. In building a model train layout in your apartment or in your room, you will need smaller scales or narrow gauges. You can select from H0, N or Z scales. These smaller scale railroads will allow you to use just enough space to achieve smooth curves and switches. You might also want to look into sectional tracks because they prove to be a lot easier to use than bending flexible tracks to smooth and narrow curves.
You must also consider the kind of theme you want to have. The smaller space in your room or apartment will limit your choices to a few good themes, and these often do not include main line themes. It would be more appropriate to select tramway, industrial or branch line themes. You can still go for a main line theme but you will have to scale it down significantly. This means you might not be able to enjoy all the details due to its small size.
Before you start working on that small model train layout, ask yourself if you are really sure about what you are about to do. It would also help to check the measurements again so you can keep yourself from building curves that are too sharp, switch angles that are too steep or sidings that are too short.
Building a model train layout on a small layout can truly be a lot of challenge. Nevertheless, having a small train set is far better than having no train set all, isn’t it?

4. Z scale – as it is the last letter of the alphabet, it stands to reason that the Z scale is the smallest size possible in relation to the ratio of a real life train and is actually 1/220.
